The Principal's Office: School Leadership, Why or Why Not?
What is stopping you from leading? You may see the lives of school leaders and think, “that’s not for me”. You see the long hours, countless paperwork, or the look of stress on the Principal’s face. Do you reflect on the challenges you currently face and think you do not want to add to them, but you have a desire to make a greater impact.
There is a way to lead without the responsibilities consuming your life.
School leadership is a career choice, while there are increased responsibilities, it was never meant to be all consuming.
You don’t have to lead in a way that conforms to traditional views of leadership. Realistically, the education industry has emphasized a need for more educational leaders, spoke of the need for educational leaders to be instructional leaders, but has yet to focus on the leadership aspect. This lack of focus has caused many aspiring leaders to have second thoughts, new leaders to feel like they are drowning, which has forced many to try to live up to a definition of leadership that is unrealistic, counterproductive, and simply exhausting.
You can have a leadership position and operate in a way that is best for you, which will produce greater results.
Also, you do not have to have a position to be a person of influence in your building. There are multiple ways you can be person of influence to make a greater impact. There are multiple ways to reach the same result.
